Christchurch based artist Darryn George (Ngapuhi) graduated from ILAM in 1993 and in 1998 completed a Masters of Fine Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne. Although the optical effects of George's abstract paintings refer to1960s modernism, the current 'Tipuna' series stems from the designs of tukutuku panels found in meeting houses, in particular the Poutama (Stairway to Heaven) design. The titles for each work incorporate both English and Maori names of Biblical characters and when considered in relation to the strong colour combinations help to unfold the underlying narratives. As Sarah Farrar has noted, "Like tukutuku panels which convey genealogy and history, George's paintings create a genealogy of Maori and Christian belief systems that has direct relevance to his own life."
