Kelcy Taratoa is currently completing his Masters in Maori Visual Arts at Massey University. His latest series of work, entitled the 'Who Am I' episodes, investigates the self-creation of identity for urban Maori. Taratoa believes, "It is common knowledge that land holds the necessities of life. Her resources feed, clothe, shelter, and maintain human existence. On another level, korero aoteatea, matauranga Maori, tikanga, and whakapapa, are inseparable considerations in the conceptualization of land as papatuanuku. Mana Tangata in my opinion is about the preservation of these cultural practices." Taratoa's Masters Graduate exhibition will be held at The Dowse in Wellington at the end of the year.
