Melbourne based installation artist Sally Smart (b.1960) studied at the South Australian School of Art, Victorian College of the Arts and Monash University. She has established a reputation as one of Australia's leading feminist artists, creating felt and fabric cut out installations that investigate issues of gender and identity.
Anna Clabburn believes, "Sally Smart is an artist who tries to unsettle her viewer. Her fragmented objects invite us in but never quite allow us to feel 'at home'. While there is something familiar, even domestic, about her work, its physical presence and strange arrangement on the wall often make us feel ill at ease... Everything about her process of making objects suggest she is looking for something beneath the surface of what we see and feel in our everyday lives."
