Sarah Guppy

Sarah Guppy (b.1957) describes her job as that of 'transformer'. Her constant need to reinvent or recycle has taken her from the traditional canvas and paper to ceramic, glass and even potters bats. Parallel to her exploration of new shapes and surfaces, for the past twenty five years Guppy has been evolving certain themes, symbols, and ideas.

Moving on from her recent 'nest egg' series, Guppy's latest exhibition of abstract paintings on glass entitled 'Brilliant Shadow', was inspired by the writings of the 11th Century theologian St. Thomas Aquinas. The beauty and clarity of his poetry prompted Guppy to explore that brilliant shadow from which all creation comes. French enamel on glass, the resultant works were luscious and luminous in colour, incorporating collaged text with layers of both organic and symmetrical designs.

Living in England from 1978 to 1996 Guppy exhibited and travelled extensively, working in many London galleries and training and working in the art of gilding. Her work is in collections in America, Europe, Australia, England and New Zealand.
