Wiremu Wilson-Diamond

Wiremu Wilson-Diamond (Ngati Pukenga O Manaia Ki Hauraki) is currently completing his Masters of Fine Arts at ELAM's Te Toi Hou Department. Fusing the concepts and techniques of Maori material culture with those from Western painting traditions, he expresses and acknowledges his dual Maori and Pakeha ancestry whilst exploring other central themes. In his work Wilson-Diamond addresses the gender boundaries that have been imbued in the processes of Maori material culture, issues surrounding our colonial history and identity, and concerns regarding the sourcing of materials and respecting the kaitiaki of our resources or environment. Wilson-Diamond holds a deep respect for those who have passed on to him their knowledge, skills and guidance, and is in return gifting his knowledge to the next generation through his art and teaching.

Attending Nga Tapuwae College in 1989 to learn Te Reo, Wilson-Diamond found that with Maori language came an immense amount of pride and self-dignity. He went on to study politics and then Maori material culture at the University of Auckland with Dante Bonica and has learnt aspects of Te Whare Pora (fibre work with harakeke, muka, tikauka, kuta and pingao) from Te Hemoata Henare as well as fellow artist Alicia Courtney.

Using the concepts and technologies of Maori material culture in a contemporary manner, Wilson-Diamond is undertaking a journey, "to use both mediums of art and material culture to communicate and try to inspire."
