Chris Bailey : MOTUAARAIROA

Chris Bailey’s first solo show at FHE Galleries Motuaariroa has received high acclaim by the public and art critics alike. Speaking of one of the works in the show, Matau in his review, TJ McNamara writes, “The shape is stylised, keeping the high polish and the sense of sharp edges but it is also roughened and has been subjected to heat. It combines the polish of utility with the roughness of the earth to form a powerful symbol of our connection with land and sea.” He goes on to say that “There are only seven pieces [in the exhibition] but the combined weight is several tonnes. Each work has taken on the strength of stone and is something special to this land. It is an exceptionally fine exhibition.”

Chris charteris, Kotuku, Novemeber 2007

A MASSIVE congratulations to Chris Charteris, whose show, Kotuku, almost sold out even before it previewed! Also for achieving a fantastic review in the New Zealand Herald from art critic, TJ McNamara. McNamara wrote, “Michelangelo said carving was releasing what is already in the stone. Charteris is able to take local materials - rock, pounamu, whalebone - and, by carving, reveal the inner life of the material in a way that is linked with traditions here and from abroad.” McNamara goes on further to evaluate a number of Chris’s individual sculptures, commenting on their elegance and revelation of the materials “inner life”.
