Emily Siddell | Poem of the One World

Opening 26 November 2024

A search for visual stimulation has led me to travel to exotic locations filled with jaw droppingly beautiful and technically awe-inspiring objects created across time and geography.

Crafts, textiles and architecture highlight cultural uniqueness but so often forms, motifs, symbols and techniques reoccur across diverse societies, religions and eras. After having my mind blown by the hugeness of the world and the vast amount of exquisite things people have made, I returned home with fresh eyes. My attention returned to the stunning lushness of the landscape of Aotearoa. My focus turned to the new shoots and tiny seeds springing to life in my garden. This led me to imagine that on an even smaller, molecular level, similarities outweigh differences.

The germination of this work sprung from abstracting natural forms and considering them on a cellular level. The use of tiny beads to create larger beads emulates the way patterns in nature are repeated and enlarged to form the structure of the plant.
